One of the best mid-credits scenes in the history of the MCU was in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Here we see the Daily Bugle broadcasting a message from Quentin Beck/Mysterio that he recorded before his death. In in, he reveals that Spider-Man’s secret identity is Peter Parker. It was the most unexpected scene in Marvel Studios’ history. What made it even greater is that J. K. Simmons returned to play the Dailey Bugle’s J. Jonah Jameson.
So the question now becomes what happens to Peter Parker in the third Untitled Spider-Man film? Now that everyone knows his identity, his enemies will come after him and possibly his Aunt May.
It just so happens that a similar situation occurred to Parker in the comics. In the Civil War story (2006-07), the world also learned who he is after Peter announced it himself at a press conference by taking off his mask. He did this to support the Superhuman Registration Act. The decision turns out to have consequences for Parker because, after Civil War, Aunt May is shot by a gunman that was hired by the Kingpin. Desperate to fix his situation, Peter turned to Doctor Strange, Tony Stark and Reed Richards for help. With the combination of magic and technology, the three superheroes were, in fact, able to restore his secret identity by making the whole world forget about it.
Could this be the route that the MCU’s third Spider-Man film goes down? In a lot of ways, it would make sense. Obviously, Stark (death) and Richards (not introduced yet) would not be involved, but Doctor Stephen Strange could. As we saw in Avengers: Infinity Way and Endgame, Strange’s power levels have grown since his first film, so clearly, he could come up with someway to help Parker.
I could also see him taking up a mentor role to Holland’s Parker. Similar to how Stark and Happy were in the first two films. Strange could become someone that Parker turns to for guidance. Marvel and Sony could also do something with Aunt May being in danger, and that’s what convinces Peter to seek help. She doesn’t have to get shot like in the comics, but something life-threatening perhaps.
Well, whatever happens, I’m sure we will find out if they are going down this route when shooting begins. Someone will snap a picture of Benedict Cumberbatch with Tom Holland on set, or maybe it will leak online. All I can say is I cannot wait for July 2021 when it comes out!
