The MCU trailer drought is over! Sunday night Disney released the first trailer for the upcoming WandaVision series set to air on Disney+ later this year. As expected, the Marvel Studios produced series looks like it will be nothing like we’ve seen before in the MCU. It certainly raised many questions on what exactly is going with the Scarlet Witch and Vision. Let’s break some of it down.
Where does it take place?
From the very start of the trailer, it’s clear that Wanda and Vision are not in the traditional MCU realty that we’ve come to love over the last decade. Shots switching from black and white to color show the two living together happily in a suburban home. If that’s not confusing enough, it also appears that the time setting is skipping between different eras (1950s to 1990s).
So where the hell are they? Well, it’s my opinion that they are in some kind of reality that Wanda created. It’s long been rumored that the series will introduce us to her reality-warping abilities, something she’s known to do in the comics. It seemed you even got a little glimpse of it when Wanda appears to be replacing objects in the room.
Is Vision dead or alive?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, Vision has been dead in the MCU since Avengers: Infinity War. So while it’s obviously been known that he would return for the series, the question is, how is he back, and is he alive or dead?
The answer to the how is Wanda probably brought him back. Her ability to change realty means that she can bring anyone back to life or even erase them from existence. As seen at the end of Endgame, she still was grieving over his loss. So to fix it, she brought him back to life.
As for if he’s dead or alive? That gets even more confusing when Kathryn Hahn’s character tells him that he is still in fact dead. My guess is the answer is somewhere in the middle. He’s still dead in the main MCU realty, but alive in Wanda’s reality. The question we all want to know is what will he be at the end of the series?
Who is Kathryn Hahn playing?
One supporting character heavily featured few out the trailer is Kathryn Hahn’s character. As mentioned before, she’s the one that tells Vision that he’s dead. When her casting was announced in August 2019 at Disney’s D23 convention, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said she would be playing the “nosy neighbor”. However, some have speculated that she is portraying Agatha Harkness.
In the comics, she’s a witch that mentors Wanda and helps her develop her powers. While it’s still not confirmed that’s who she’s playing, evidence did point to it during the trailer. If you look at the scene where she encounters Vision, your notice that she’s wearing a witch’s Halloween costume. This could be a small hint that the rumors are true.
Who was that mysterious government agency surrounding Monica Rambeau?
The most action-packed sequence in the entire trailer was when Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris) was being ejected out of what looked like the realty that Wanda and Vision are in. After she lands in a field, she is immediately surrounded by an unknown government agency.
So who was that agency? According to photos taken during shooting, it’s S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department). In the comics, S.W.O.R.D. is an intelligence agency that monitors extraterrestrial threats to earth. Rambeau appears to be working for them.
