One of the fan’s favorite episodes of What If…? was the second installment that revolved around T’Challa becoming Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill. The episode was very emotional for fans because it was voiced by the late Chadwick Boseman.
During an interview with Variety, the show’s director Bryan Andrews talked about Boseman’s involvement in the series and revealed that there were plans for him to have his own spinoff show.
“Chadwick had recorded his Star Lord T’Challa stuff early. But we had those later episodes that he appeared in sporadically, and it was a long stretch before we got him [again]. And it was not long after the final recording that he passed,” Andrews explains. “I think it was maybe just a few months, or a month. None of us knew, obviously. But, um, we got him in time to have everything.”
“I think he was also trying to make an effort because T’Challa was so important to him — and also this new version of Star Lord T’Challa was so important to him. He dug it.”
“I don’t know if he knew this, but there was planning to have Star Lord T’Challa spin off into his own show with that universe and that crew and that whole thing,” the director added. “We were all very excited. We know he would have loved it, too. And then, you know, he passed, and so all that’s in limbo. So, who knows? Maybe one day.”
Even though he doesn’t entirely rule it out, it’s hard to see Marvel Studios ever actually making it. Since the show is animated, it would be easier to recast Boseman. But given the circumstances and the backlash they would receive from fans, I doubt it will ever happen.
During the same interview, Andrews confirmed that writing for What If…? season two is already underway. Sadly, the director also confirmed that Boseman was not able to record any dialogue for it before his passing.
You can watch the entire first season of What If…? on Disney+ right now.
