(The following contains spoilers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series. You’ve been warned.)
At the end of the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series, fans were treated to their first official look at John Walker (aka U.S. Agent). Played by actor Wyatt Russell (son of Kurt Russell), Walker was introduced to a crowd as the new Captain America.
In the comics, Walker has a long and complicated history. He’s played both a villain and hero throughout the years and for a time served as Marvel’s Captain America. Unlike Rodgers’ take on the Avenger, he’s more ruthless and violent. This resulted in a confrontation between the two that ended with Walker’s defeat.
Recently Russell was interviewed by USA Today and revealed some interesting things about his character .
“I don’t think there’s really been many MCU characters who’ve had quite the dilemma he’s had in terms of trying to fit into this sort of moralistic superhero world,” Russell says of the former Marine. “He’s been thrust into this role as Captain America and he’s going to do it his way, and he wants to do it right. But his way is a very specific way that he has learned through being basically a trained human hunter. I mean, that’s what Marines are. They’re not Steve Rogers, they’re not the same. They’re not like Boy Scouts anymore. They’re a little bit more gnarly.”
“There’s always an element of reality (in the show) where it’s like, well, sometimes you need that guy, and it’s not always pretty,” he adds. “It’s fun to play those characters because they’re always at odds with themselves. They’re always at odds with their own abilities and with their own moral compass. They know what is right, kind of, but they also want to win and they battle with that.”
Another thing Russell also mentioned is that the MCU’s version of the character will not have superhuman abilities like he does in the comics. However, judging by his comments and a leaked set video, it does seem like he will have some violent tendencies.
I’m sure will be seeing more of U.S. Agent in the second episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier when it’s released next Friday.
