Since Spider-Man: No Way Home was released on December 17, it has managed to blow away everyone’s expectations at the box office by bringing in nearly $1.7B globally. A big reason why it’s done so well is because it saw the return of past Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Earlier this month, we heard Garfield discuss making his dramatic return. Now in a group interview with Deadline that involved all three Spidey’s (including Tom Holland), Maguire spoke for the very first time about coming back.
Maguire opened things up by telling exactly how he got involved in the Sony and Marvel Studios film.
“I went and had a meeting with Amy and Kevin. Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige. And had talked about… They sort of just teased it,” Maguire said. “I think Amy was like, ‘We’d love to talk to you, and you you know what this is about.’ And I was like ‘okay, sure. Let’s go chat.'” Holland then joked that it wasn’t much for him to go on.
“Yeah, no, I know,” Maguire laughed and then said “maybe you could just give me a little bit of information. But, I don’t know. I gotta say, I was intrigued immediately. In that conversation, the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies, and what it meant i think to Amy and Kevin was was apparent. To me, when artists or people who are um steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them that I just wanted to join that.”
It had been more than 14 years (Spider-Man 3) since the last time we saw the actor put on the Spidey suit. Later in the interview, Maguire talked about what it was like to put it back on.
“It was uncomfortable getting it on and then it’s a goof, and then it also has a power, in a sense, because it brings me back into that character. It really does. There’s so much affinity for this character, it means so much to so many people that once the goofiness of being in lycra or spandex goes away, you’re like ‘Oh wow. This is cool.’ This is a responsibility, but a blessing, like something that I get to do that I’m grateful for. Honestly, being with these guys, it really was just a much, much richer experience than I anticipated or that I could really even express in words.”
Since appearing in No Way Home, there have been multiple rumors that say we have not seen the last of Maguire as Spider-Man. According to the most recent one, the actor will appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is set to be released in May. If the rumor is true, then it will be a reunion for him as the film is being directed by original Spider-Man trilogy filmmaker Sam Raimi. Guess will just have to wait and see if it’s true
