Before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, there was a lot of speculation and rumors on what a third Deadpool movie would be about. One of those rumors was that Hugh Jackman would return as Wolverine to team-up with the Merc with a Mouth.
Yesterday Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, went on his Twitter account to promote the mental health awareness movement Bell Let’s Talk. In his tweet, Reynolds revealed that the plan for Fox’s Deadpool 3 was in fact to bring Jackman back.
Since Reynolds is known for his humorous postings on social media, some thought that he was kidding. However, in a second tweet, the Canadian actor said that this was not a joke.
After Disney completed it’s acquisition of Fox in March 2019, those plans went out the window.
While it would have been cool to see Deadpool team-up with Jackman’s Wolverine, I’m kind of happy it didn’t happen. If Jackman had returned, I feel like it would have ruined his “final performance” as the character in 2017’s Logan. I always felt to have him return only a few years later would have tainted the film. It’s kind of how I feel about Chris Evans reportedly coming back to the MCU. It would ruin his perfect Avengers: Endgame ending.
As for Deadpool 3, according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the film is still happening and it will be rated R. Because of Reynolds’ busy schedule, filming will not be able to begin until next year. This means your looking at a 2023 release at the earliest.
I guess there is a possibility of a Deadpool-Wolverine team-up still happening. Something tells me though that Marvel will go a different direction.
