It’s no secret what film would bring directors Anthony and Joseph Russo back to the MCU. Since Avengers: Endgame’s opened in April 2019, they’ve been asked multiple times what project would draw them back to the Universe they’ve already conquered. The answer is always Secret Wars.
In a new interview with Bro Bible, the brothers again said that they still want to do Secret Wars film and that they think it would be bigger than both Endgame and Infinity War.
Joe: “You know, I read that when I was 10 or 11, and it was the scale of getting all of the heroes together. It was one of the first major books to do that — that was really event-storytelling to me at its finest,” he explained. “And what happens when you put all of those personalities together. I also like the idea of villains having to team up with heroes… To execute something on the scale of Infinity War was directly related to the dream of Secret Wars, which is even larger in scale.”
Anthony: “It would be the biggest movie you could possibly imagine, so that’s what really excites us about the story — the ambition of it is even bigger than the ambition of the Infinity Saga.”
It’s hard to imagine that it would be bigger than Endgame, epically since it was the highest-grossing movie of all-time worldwide. However, I have said in the past that the next film to break its record will be the next Avengers film.
In terms of characters, the brothers were right, it was the largest to date in Marvel Comics. It included members from the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. It also included villains like Doctor Doom, Galactus, Ultron, and more.
Released from 1984-85, the story of Secret Wars was not considered it’s brightest point. It revolved around an extremely powerful being called the Beyonder who transports heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe to do battle on a world he created. After Doctor Doom temporarily steals the Beyonder’s power, it ended with the heroes prevailing and the Beyonder leaving to explore the Galaxy.
With the success and popularity of the Russo’s run in the MCU, it would be a logical decision for Marvel Studios to bring them back for the next Avengers film. In another interview back in April, the brothers said that they still have a good relationship with the studio and that they are “always” having conversations with them.
At the moment, it’s not known when and what the next Avengers will be about. With Phase 4 not even starting yet because of delays, it could be a while.
