It looks like we might be seeing another well-known group coming to the MCU. According to The Illuminerdi, Marvel Studios is in the early stages of developing a project based on the Marvel Comics team, the Illuminati. The outlet says they discovered the news after coming across a cast listing with a future project titled “Marvel’s Illuminati”.
The report did not say if it will be a film or series for Disney+. They did hint that it likely would be for Marvel Studios’ Phase 5 slate. At the moment Phase 4 is scheduled to go through at least 2022. So it will be sometime before it sees the light of day.
For those unfamiliar with them, in the comics the Illuminati are a group of heroes that originally consisted of Reed Richards, Namor, Tony Stark, Doctor Stephen Strange, Professor Charles Xavier and Black Bolt. To put it simply, they were the ones behind the scenes of the Marvel Universe that are pulling the strings. They are best remembered as the ones who launched the Hulk into space, setting off the events of Planet Hulk and World War Hulk.
You’ll probably notice that with Tony Stark now dead, Doctor Strange is the only original member that’s currently in the MCU. If the studio wants to stay true to the comics than it’s going to have to start introducing some new characters over the next couple of years. Judging by the number of films/shows on their slate, that shouldn’t be a problem.
