When Avengers: Infinity War arrived in theaters in 2018, MCU fans were treated to a surprise when it was revealed that Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage was playing Eitri the Dwarf. In the film, his character comes to the God of Thunder’s aid by helping him forge his new weapon, Stormbreaker.
Within the last couple of months, there have been rumors that Dinklage would reprise his role in Thor: Love and Thunder. Well, during an interview this week with Empire to promote his new film Cyrano, Dinklage was asked if we will be seeing him in the MCU anytime soon.
“Well, there’s another Thor movie there, isn’t there? Coming out that Taika’s directed. But, I didn’t say anything. I didn’t say anything.”
It’s pretty obvious that he’s in it. We know that Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman) will become the Mighty Thor and wield Mjolnir in the upcoming film. If I had to take a wild guess, Eitri will be the one that reforges the mighty hammer for her (destroyed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok).
It’s not clear what happened to Eitri after he helped Thor in Infinity War. We got no indication that he died, but it’s still a possibility that he did off-camera. During the same interview with Empire, Dinklage talked about how if you die in a Marvel movie, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t return.
“If you die in a Marvel movie, doesn’t mean it’s your last Marvel movie. That’s the crazy thing, it doesn’t matter. Somebody could make a TV—now, there’s TV shows. It’s Marvel World, we’re just all part of it.”
Thor: Love and Thunder has quite the casting assemble. Along with Portman and possible Dinklage, it will star Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Russell Crowe as Zeus, and Christian Bale as the villain Gorr The God Butcher.
Hopefully, with less than five months until its release (July 8), we will get our first trailer soon.
