One of the things that comes to people’s minds when they think about the MCU is the Mid and After credits scenes. In all but one of the franchises 23 films (Avengers: Endgame), there has always been a scene during or after the credits to tease what lies ahead for our heroes. This tradition became so popular that it was copied by all the Studios for their franchises. Well, after careful thinking, I have listed and broken down my top 5 favorite Mid/Post scenes in the history of the MCU.
5. Iron Man 3 (2013)
Iron Man 3 as a film was not good. In fact, it’s often debated as one of the worst. However, I did very much enjoy the after-credits scene that included a surprise cameo. Being the first film out since The Avengers, the question on everyone’s mind was, would a fellow Avenger show up to help Tony Stark? Well, in some ways they did. But not in the way you expected.
During the scene, it’s revealed that at the beginning of the film when Tony was narrating, he was talking to Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk) the whole time. The only problem is we find out that Banner fell asleep listing to Tony’s story. After waking up, he has the hilarious line, “I’m not that kind of Doctor.” This made it one of the funniest and unexpected Mid/After credits scenes in the MCU and why it made my list.
4. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
By now, every Marvel fan should know the ending to Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos gets his victory and turns half the Universe to dust, in what’s probably the most emotional and shocking endings. In Wakanda and on Titan, you see half of the heroes turn to ash, one by one in a very chaotic fashion. What you did not see was how the rest of the world and Universe were being affected by this, which is where the post-credit scene comes in.
In it, you see Nick Fury and Maria Hill driving around New York City when the chaos begins. As people start to disappear, cars and helicopters start to crash. People start running and screaming, not knowing what’s happening. It is quite a frightening and scary scene to see. Finally, after Hill disappears, Fury rushes to get his emergency pager out, and as he fades away, he’s able to activate and signal Captain Marvel. It was really something to see a glimpse of the chaos that Thanos had caused across the Universe and is why it makes my list.
3. The Avengers (2012)
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said that opening-weekend of The Avengers was when he knew this franchise was going to be special. Never before had there been anything like it. A group of hero’s who had there own solo films come together to face a more significant threat in one big Blockbuster film. At the end of the film, fans wondered what bigger threats will come in the future for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. That is where our mid-credits scene comes in.
During the scene, we returned to the spot in space where Loki acquired his army. A servant is talking to his master with his back facing. The servant tells him of Loki’s failings and that to fight The Avengers could result in death. Just then, the master is revealed to be Thanos. He gets up and turns around and grins at the camera. The scene then cuts to black. After seeing this for the first time, never in my life had I felt so hyped about anything. I could not wait for what would come. This is why it made my list.
2. Iron Man (2008)
Most people think that Iron Man was the birth of the MCU. However, I actually believe that Iron Man‘s post-credit scene was its actual birth. Throughout the entire film, there wasn’t really a sense that this could be part of a 23 film (and counting) franchise. It was during the after-credits scene that you really got the feeling that this could be part of a whole shared universe.
In the scene, Tony Starks walks into his living room and sees Nick Fury standing there. Fury turns around and says to Stark, “did you think you are the only Superhero? Mr. Stark, you’ve become part of a bigger universe and you just don’t know it.” The scene itself was very short, but because of what would become of the MCU and how big it’s gotten, it’s incredible to look back and see how it all began. That is why it is number 2 on my list.
1. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
Going into Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s release, I did not expect it to produce my favorite MCU mid/after credit scene of all-time. That is probably one of the reasons that it is. I knew that it would set up the next Spider-Man film, but I did not think it would set it up in a grim way for Peter Parker.
During the scene, we see Parker, dressed as Spider-Man, drop MJ off and then jump on top of a lamp post. Just then The Daily Bugle begins broadcasting a message from Quentin Beck/Mysterio that he recorded before his death. In in, he reveals that Spider-Man’s secret identity is Peter Parker. Peter watches in horror as he puts his arms over his head, and the scene cuts to black. Another aspect that made me put this as number 1 was that it saw the return of J. K. Simmons playing J. Jonah Jameson. A role he played in the Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy in the 2000s and one of my favorite characters. All these things together made it an easy decision for me to put it as number 1.
