The most exciting panel I look forward to each year at San Diego Comic-Con is Marvel Studios’ presentation in Hall H. Studio President Kevin Feige always comes prepared with exciting announcements and reveals in front of 6,000 plus die-hard fans.
Unfortunately, the last two Comic-Con’s have been canceled, and while the event’s organizers are holding panels online again, Marvel Studios has opted out for the second straight year. In memory of the studios’ appearances at the annual event, I have decided to do a top 5 list of my favorite Marvel Studios moments at San Diego Comic-Con. Hopefully next year, the studio will return to Hall H, epically since I will be there.
5. Avengers Cast Confirmed (2010)
In the summer of 2010, for the most part it was known through online reports who was going to play who in the first Avengers film. Other than Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner, all the roles had been set for at least a year. However, to see them on stage together, introduced one at a time by Nick Fury himself, Samuel L Jackson, really just made it sink in that this film was happening.
4. Josh Brolin’s surprise appearance with the Infinity Gauntlet (2014)
In July of 2014, during Marvel Studios’ panel for their upcoming film Avengers: Age of Ultron, Chris Hardwick (host) asked the panel what comes next for the Avengers after Ultron. Robert Downey Jr. than grabbed the mic and said “the great thing about Marvel is they always have the next thing up their sleeve. So we’ve got Thanos.” Just then Josh Brolin appeared on stage with a mock Infinity Gauntlet. As you can hear in the video below, the 6,000 plus in attendance loved it.
3. Phase 4 slate revealed (2019)
After taking a year off, Marvel Studios returned to Hall H in summer of 2019. Fresh off Avengers: Endgame’s box-office record performance, the MCU was as popular as ever as fans were excited to see what comes next. As usual, the studio exceeded expectations in an hour plus showing of nearly their entire upcoming Phase 4 slate.
Not a lot of footage was shown, but release dates and a ton of casting news was dropped. The biggest one happened at the very end when it was announced that two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali will play Blade in a future film.
2. Avengers: Infinity War footage is shown (2017)
Out of the five events I’ve chosen, this is the only one I happened to be present for. So I’m a little biased on why this is so high. I got into Hall H after waiting for over 16 hours the previous day. Everyone knew that they were going to show some footage of Infinity War because they had done so the week before at Disney’s D23 event.
Of course, showing it came in dramatic fashion. Kevin Feige acted like they weren’t going to show it, but once he was persuaded by Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chadwick Boseman, and director Joe Russo, he caved and the footage was shown. It was a little cheesy, the way it was orchestrated, but at the same time, it definitely did make it more exciting and made my long wait worth it.
1. First footage from Iron Man shown (2007)
This is number one for me because it was mine and the rest of the world’s introduction to the MCU. There had been no footage released of Iron Man to the public to that point, so no one really knew what to expect. The second I saw the leaked footage online that summer in 2007, I knew It would be special for years to come. I will always remember seeing the final moments of the footage where Stark, in his Mark III suit, breaks the sound bearer. It really made my heart go flying.
