The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had some fantastic fight scenes during its 23 film run. Whether it’s good choreography or mind-blowing action, they have always been fun to watch. Fights are nothing new to movies, but Marvel Studios and the directors they worked with have done a great job raising the bar.
That is why I have decided to do a top 5 fights in the MCU. One thing you will notice about this list is that Captain America has a significant presence.
Honorable Mention: Airport scene (Captain America: Civil War)
So why didn’t it crack my top 5? I guess because while it was cool to see so many heroes going against one another, it really just felt like a sparing match. Other than the end where Rhodes gets injured, it felt like there wasn’t that much emotion in it. That always bothered me. Also, I couldn’t figure out what to take out. I was so attached to my 1-5 choices already that I just couldn’t bring myself to remove one. A lot of people are going to disagree with me on this but I guess that’s what’s great about these lists. It’s your opinion, not everyone is going to agree.
5. Scarlet Witch vs. Thanos (Avengers: Endgame)
Watching Scarlet Witch nearly take down Thanos single-handed in Avengers: Endgame, was fun to watch. I always felt that in Infinity War, she was not portrayed that well. In dust-ups against the Black Order and briefly Thanos, she seemed somewhat weak. But she is not weak. In fact, she is one of the most powerful Avengers. Some would say she is.
In the fight, a vengeful Wanda takes on Thanos as he tries to get the Infinity Gauntlet. She’s able to overpower him with her telekinesis and raise him in the air. Right before she can kill him, he orders his ship to fire on the battlefield, which allows him to escape her grips. After the fight, one thing was clear, the Scarlet Witch is a badass.
4. Captain America vs. Winter Soldier Street Fight (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)
The street fight between Captain America and the Winter Soldier during Captain America: The Winter Soldier is probably the best-choreographed fight in all of the MCU. The scene was fast-paced and suspenseful. Had amazing camera work and was edited really well. The Russo Brothers did a fantastic job of shooting it.
Of course, the fight did end in a standstill, with no clear winner. However, we did learn here that the Winter Soldier is Steve Rodgers’ long lost presumed dead friend Bucky Barnes. The two would have a rematch at the film’s conclusion, but it was not on the same level of excitement as this one.
3. Thanos vs. Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy (Avengers: Infinity War)
This fight was really something to watch. Split over two scenes, it was 1 vs. 7 as Thanos went against Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Mantis, Drax, Nebula, and Star-Lord. Mostly shot in CGI, this was a fight I had been waiting for along time.
It was a fight right out of comic books. A bunch of heroes band together to take on a potent threat that’s much stronger than all of them combined. To this point in the MCU, there had not been anything like it.
My favorite part of the fight was Doctor Strange trying to take down the Mad Titan by himself. You really got to see how much Strange’s power level had grown since his 2016 solo film. While he did hold his own for a while, he eventually fell to Thanos like the rest of the Avengers.
2. Captain America’s Elevator Fight Scene (Captain America: The Winter Soldier)
I’ve seen this fight over 100 times, and I still think it’s fantastic every time I watch it. Since Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s release in 2014, this fight has become one of the most memorable scenes in all of the MCU. To see Captain America take on and beat a bunch of guys in the elevator was epic.
Like the street fight with him and the Winter Soldier, it was fast-paced, edited really well, and suspenseful. The music in it was just perfect. It was a fast tempo sort of score that kept your adrenaline up. It is perfect for watching right before you go to the gym or you need to get pumped up.
1. Captain America vs. Thanos (Avengers: Endgame)
The two times I saw Avengers: Endgame in theaters, when Captain America picked up Mjölnir and threw it at Thanos, the audience cheered. Captain America vs. Thanos was much more than just a cool fight, it was a crowd-pleasing moment. Some people would even say it’s one of their favorite moments in the history of the MCU.
The fight itself started out in favor of Captain America. With the hammer, he’s able to pound the Mad Titan over and over. He even summons lightning and shocks him. However, as it went on, Thanos was able to recover and wound Cap. At the very end, everyone was shocked to see that Thanos’ sword was able to break Cap’s Vibranium shield. When I saw this the first time in theaters, I remember hearing some girl shouting, “oh my god”. For some, it was an emotional thing to see.
The fight really had it all. It was crowd-pleasing, exciting, entertaining, and emotional. It was not a hard choice to make it number one on my list.
