Marvel Studios chooses Bassam Tariq to direct its Blade film

By Stephen Ippolito | July 19th, 2021

According to the reliable Justin Kroll at Deadline, Marvel Studios is in talks with Bassam Tariq to direct its upcoming Blade film. While the deal isn’t don’t yet, Kroll says that he is their top choice to helm the project.

Best known for directing Mogul Mowgli in 2020, Tariq’s hiring comes after a long search by the studio that began last fall.

Announced at San Deigo Comic-Con in 2019, Blade will star two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali as the vampire hunter superhero. Back in February, Stacy Osei-Kuffour was hired to write the script.

Originally the film was scheduled to begin filming this September. However, to give Osei-Kuffour more time to work on the script, filming was pushed back to July 2022.

At the moment, Blade does not have a release date. With filming not beginning for another year, it probably won’t hit theaters until 2023, possibly 2024.

  1. I don’t know much about Bassam Tariq or Blade. I haven’t seen any of Bassam’s films but I think trust that Marvel found a good director because they have a great track record of finding good directors. I know that Blade has a trilogy of R rated films that have him fighting Vampires which sounds like a great new concept for Marvel. But I don’t really know how it’ll work. Hopefully it works out fine but since it’s not coming for 2 or 3 years I almost forgot about it. How do you feel about Blade?

    1. I think it will be interesting. All the other Blade films were rated R, but this is going to be PG-13. It will be interesting to see how Marvel softens it without losing its edge.
