Another major casting in the MCU just broke in the last hour. According to Deadline’s Justin Kroll, the studio has chosen newcomer Iman Vellani to play Kamala Khan in the upcoming Ms. Marvel series on Disney+.
Announced at Disney’s D23 in August 2019, the series will follow Khan, a Pakistani-American girl living in New Jersey, who gained her powers after being exposed to Terrigen Mist. In addition to getting her own show, Khan will also appear in upcoming MCU films. Given her connection to her in the comics, one of those films is expected to be Captain Marvel 2.
The role for Vellani will be her first major Hollywood production. In fact, she is so unknown that she didn’t even have her own IMDb page before this was announced. According to Deadline, the best thing she is remembered for is her role at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival. She was part of the Next Wave Committee, which was tasked with adding a special tag to films that they believed would resonate with their peers.
Recently we also learned that the studio had chosen filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Meera Menon to direct episodes. Now that the show has it’s lead and directors, I would expect production to begin in the next couple of months.
