Marvel Studios announced that the first trailer for their upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder (released yesterday) was watched over 209M times on all platforms during its first 24 hours of release. Overall, the total was the studio’s fourth-highest ever in that timeframe, behind last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (355M), Avengers: Endgame (289M), and Avengers: Infinity War (230M). The number was substantially higher than the last Thor film (Thor: Ragnarok), seen 136M times in April 2017.
One MCU record that it did break was the shortest time between a film’s first trailer’s release and a film’s release (81 days). Before Love and Thunder, the average time the studio released one was 155 days before it hit theaters. No reason has been given yet as to why Disney/Marvel waited so long to provide us with our first look at the God of Thunder’s next adventure.
In an official synopsis also released yesterday, Thor: Love and Thunder will see “Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods.” While we have some idea of how Bale’s Gorr will look, he did not appear in yesterday’s trailer.
Along with Hemsworth and Bale, Thor: Love and Thunder will star Natalie Portman (Jane Foster/Mighty Thor), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Jaimie Alexander (Sif), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Karen Gillan (Nebula), and Russell Crowe (Zeus). Taika Waititi will once again provide the voice of Korg and serve as the movie’s director.
With Thor: Love and Thunder arriving in theaters on July 8th, you can probably expect the second trailer to drop in late May-early June.
