Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series Armor Wars, starring Don Cheadle as James Rhodes (aka War Machine), just took a big step in its development process. According to multiple outlets, the studio has hired Yassir Lester as its head writer.
The hiring reunites Lester with Cheadle, as the two worked together on the Showtime series Black Monday. His other writing credits include The Carmichael Show and Girls. Before he was a writer/actor, Lester worked as a stand-up comedian.
Announced at Disney’s Investor Day event last December, Amor Wars will be based off the popular 1980s Iron Man storyline from the comics. With Robert Downey Jr. out of the picture, this version of the story will have Rhodey as the lead.
In terms of casting, Cheadle is the only one that’s been announced so far. With Justin Hammer a key figure in the comics version of the story, fans have been hoping that Sam Rockwell will make his return to the MCU. The Oscar-winning actor played the character in 2010’s Iron Man 2.
As for when filming will begin, in an interview last month, Cheadle said it would likely start sometime “next year.” With a writer now hired, perhaps it will now begin sooner.
