Since it was first announced in the summer of 2019, fans have been hoping that Marvel Studios would cast John Krasinski as Reed Richards and his wife Emily Blunt as Sue Storm in their upcoming Fantastic Four film. However, although the film has a director attached (Jon Watts), it doesn’t appear that the studio is close to announcing casting.
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said not to expect any news on the topic anytime soon.
“I don’t think it’s soon,” he admitted. “You know, this is our first red carpet event in two years, we’ll see what happens with upcoming gatherings and fan events where we can release more news. I hope [it’s] sometime in the near future.”
Because of the pandemic, Marvel Studios hasn’t participated in a “fan event” since Feige appeared at Comic-Con Experience in Brazil in December 2019. The closest thing we’ve gotten is last December at Disney’s Investor Day Event, which is where we learned the Watts news. It doesn’t appear that the studio will participate in San Diego Comic-Con’s online event later this month. So if they are going to do one this year, it will have to be in the fall.
As for the Fantastic Four film, in February, it was reported that the studio had just begun looking at writers. So it seems that Marvel hasn’t made that much more progress in the film’s development since then.
At the moment, Fantastic Four doesn’t have a release date. If I had to guess, it probably won’t hit theaters until mid-late 2023, possibly 2024.
