Last summer, it was revealed during Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con presentation that Mahershala Ali was going to play Blade in an upcoming film. While there’s been no word since on the film’s deployment, there have been rumors that the studio has been meeting with potential directors.
One person who wants to take a crack at helming it is John Wick director Chad Stahelski. A long-time stuntman before getting his first directing gig in 2014, Stahelski did an interview with ComicBook.com and explained why he wants to work on the film.
“If the opportunity ever came, I would like to take a stab at…the one that really jumps out to me would be like Blade. If they were going to redo Blade or something like that, just because I feel that one, for some reason, the vampire martial art action vibe. That would be a cool one to stretch and try and reinvent.”
Given his directing style with all three John Wick films, a Blade directed by Stahelski sounds pretty cool to me. It would bring back memories of Wesley Snipes’ take on the Day Walker in the original Blade made in 1998. Stahelski has worked with Marvel Studios in the past when he was a second-unit director on Captain America: Civil War. So there is already a professional relationship in place.
One of the many things that would prevent it from happening is that Stahelski is pretty busy the next couple of years. Between running his production company 87Eleven Entertainment, and shooting the fourth and fifth installments in the John Wick series next year, he’s got a lot on his plate.
At the moment, it’s not known when Blade will hit theaters.
