At the moment, there is no information on when the next Avengers film will come out. There’s no doubt that Marvel Studios and Disney will continue the franchise with the record-breaking box office success of Endgame. When the studio does decide to gather up Earth’s Mightiest Heroes again, there’s already one director that you can cross off the list.
In a Q&A with fans on Instagram, Guardians of the Galaxy director/writer James Gunn was asked about the possibility of directing an Avengers movie down the line.
“I haven’t been asked, but I wouldn’t do it if I was.”
This shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise to fans. Gunn has repeatedly hinted that the upcoming GOTG Vol. 3 will likely be his last in the series. By the sound of it to, it will probably be the last Marvel film he does for a while.
When Vol. 3 does finally come out, likely 2023, Gunn will have been involved in the MCU for over a decade. That is a long time to be involved in any film franchise. So it makes sense that he might want a break. Also, while Gunn has done a fantastic job with GOTG, Kevin Feige and the rest of Marvel Studios might not think he’s the right fit for the franchise. So even if he wanted to do it, there’s no guarantee that he would get the gig.
As mentioned before, no one outside the studio has any idea when the world’s most popular film franchise will release its next film. It was not part of the Phase 4 slate released at San Diego Comic-Con last summer. Unless Marvel pulls a fast one on us, the earliest that it could be released is 2023. More likely though, it will be later than that.
