The last we saw of Thor was at the end of Avengers: Endgame when he got a ride from the Guardians of the Galaxy to go to an unknown location. Before Thor: Love and Thunder was announced, some speculated that Thor would appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 before the fourth installment of Thor. Well, according to Groot himself, Vin Diesel, the complete opposite is happening. The Guardians of the Galaxy will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder before they appear in the third installment of their series.
Talking to Comic Book.com’s Brandon Davis, Diesel spilled the beans on the news in an interview:
“I am waiting and excited for my friend James Gunn to knock this next one out of the park,” Diesel said. “He took The Suicide Squad so he’s about to embark on it. Thor will also, the director talked to me about Thor will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy. That’ll be very interesting, nobody knows, maybe I shouldn’t have said anything.”
Diesel also said that the next time we see Groot he will be “Alpha Groot.” The last we saw of Groot he was in teenage from, so “Alpha Groot” may imply that he will now be fully grown in the next outing.
It’s unclear if the full roster of the Guardians will appear in Thor 4, but the news does makes sense because, like we said before, the last time we saw everyone, they were jetting off earth together. It’s also not clear the size of their roles in the film. Perhaps it will be slightly bigger than a cameo spot, and will see the Guardians at the beginning of the film dropping the Thunder God off back on earth? Until November 5, 2021, we will have to wait and see.
