According to The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez, actor Gael Garcia Bernal has been cast as the lead for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ Halloween Special. While details for the project remain under wraps, it is expected to be based on the character Werewolf by Night.
A Mexico native, Gael García Bernal was most recently seen in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old. In 2016, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role in the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle.
In Marvel Comics, Werewolf by Night is the name of two different characters. The first was Jack Russell (debuted in 1972), a descendent of humans cursed with lycanthropy. The second was Jake Gomez, who was introduced more recently (2020). It is not known specifically which one Bernal will play.
Filming for the series is slated to begin sometime in early 2022. It’s expected to arrive on the Disney streaming service sometime in October of that year.
Since Moon Knight first appeared in Werewolf by Night’s comic (1975), there has been some speculation that Bernal could make his MCU debut as the character in the Moon Knight show. The Oscar Isaac-led Disney+ series is expected to be released sometime in the first half of 2022.
