Last month, actor Ryan Reynolds teased that some news related to Deadpool 3 would be coming “sooner rather than later.” A few hours ago, news finally arrived as The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Shawn Levy is in negotiations to direct the film. Shortly after it broke, Reynolds and Levy posted their reactions on their Twitter accounts.
This will be the third film that Levy and Reynolds will have worked together on over the last few years (Free Guy, The Adam Project). Last August, when Free Guy was released, the filmmaker hinted that he was in the running to helm the project.
Thanks to Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, Deadpool 3 will be produced by Marvel Studios. The first film (2016) was directed by Tim Miller, while the sequel (2018) was helmed by David Leitch.
Deadpool 3 will be the first rated R movie that Marvel Studios will have ever produced. Outside of Reynolds, it is unknown if any characters from the first two films will return. Originally Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin were hired to write the script. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (who worked on the first two movies) have now been tasked with writing it.
At the moment, the film does not have a release date. Now that a director is attached, I’m sure will find out soon, along with other updates.
