It’s been known for a while that characters from previous films in the MCU will be returning for the Falcon and Winter Soldier. Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl’s Baron Zemo, and Georges St-Pierre’s Batroc have all been confirmed to return for the series. Now in a new interview with Script Apart podcast (via Empire), writer Derek Kolstad reveals that more characters from the MCU’s past are in store.
“What I will say is that there are characters from the earliest Marvel movies that are coming back,” Kolstad teased. “We’re layering them in and reinventing them in a way that’s gonna shift the storytelling structure. It’s f***ing awesome.”
Speculation has already started online that the characters Kolstad is referring to could be villains from Phase 1. The Leader, Abomination, and Justin Hammer are just some of the foes that could be a possibility. All three are still alive, so perhaps one of them will cross paths with Sam and Bucky.
With U.S. Agent involved in the show, another possibility is that it’s someone related to the Super Soldier Serum project. Perhaps we get a flashback that shows Abraham Erskine ( Stanley Tucci) or Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) in the project’s early stages.
The series is in the late stages of production and is currently filming in Prague. Originally the Marvel Studios produced show was supposed to be released on Disney+ in August. However, thanks to the COVID-19 Pandemic, it was pushed back and will now arrive sometime in early 2021.
