During its Thursday night previews yesterday, Marvel Studios latest film Eternals managed to bring in $9.5M at the domestic box office. The total makes it the third-best opening during the post-pandemic era (Venom: Let There Be Carnage $11.6M, Black Widow $13.2M).
At the moment, the Phase Four film is projected to earn around $75M in North America and $150M worldwide during the three-day weekend.
At one point, Eternals was projected to earn north of $100M during its opening weekend. However, buzz for the film seemingly took a dip when it became the first MCU movie to be rated “Rotten” on Rotten Tomatoes.
Interestingly, the reviews that have come in so far from the fans have been much more positive. Through 1,000+ reviews, Eternals holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Audience Score. This would put it higher than past MCU movies like Captain Marvel (45%), Ant-Man and The Wasp (74%), Black Panther (79%), Avengers: Age of Ultron (83%), Thor (76%), Thor: The Dark Word (75%), and Captain America: The First Avenger (74%). So clearly, there is some disconnect between critics and fans about how good it is.
Have you seen Eternals? If yes, did you like it or not?
