During a recent interview with the Associated Press to promote his new movie Space Jam: A New Legacy, actor Don Cheadle, who plays James Rhodes (aka War Machine) in the MCU, gave an update on his upcoming Marvel Studios produced series Armor Wars.
“We are just talking about what that show is going to be. We probably will start filming sometime next year and are just kind of cracking the story right now, deciding what’s that journey gonna look like, what’s Rhodey’s…the iteration of this going to be. Obviously people know Armor Wars-if they know Armor Wars they know what the series is about but it’s also kind of figuring out how to establish and dig really deep into who Rhodey is because we haven’t really seen a lot of that in the movies.”
It was thought that the Disney+ series would arrive sometime in 2022. However, if filming is not going to begin until “next year,” it’s possible that it won’t be released until 2023.
Announced at Disney’s Investor Day Event last December, Armor Wars will be based on the classic 1987-88 Iron Man story arc from the comics. With Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark out of the picture, the studio has switched things up, and the series will now revolve around Cheadle’s Rhodey.
Other than Cheadle, no one else has been cast yet for the series. In fact, it still doesn’t even have a director.
In the comics, Iron Man foe Justin Hammer was heavily involved in that version of the story. Because of this, fans are hoping that this means Sam Rockwell, who played the character in 2010’s Iron Man 2, will finally make his return to the MCU. Will just have to wait and see.
