During its third weekend of release, Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness crossed the $800M mark worldwide ($803M). In doing so, the Phase Four film officially passed The Batman $768M to became the highest-grossing movie so far in 2022.
Domestically, the sequel finished number one at the box office for a third straight weekend after bringing in $31.6M. To date, the film has made $342M in North America, which is already $100M more than the first Doctor Strange ($232M) made in 2016.
While its expected to drop out of first place next weekend (Top Gun: Maverick), it should bring in a decent amount stateside because of the long weekend (Memorial Day). By the end of its run, Multiverse of Madness should finish with around $400M domestically.
The question that everyone wants to know is does it have enough legs to top $1B globally? According to Forbes’ Box Office Pundit Scott Mendelson, he thinks it will finish $50M short ($950M). He does note that had it been released in China, Russia, and Ukraine, it would have easily topped the mark.
Personally, I’m with Mendelson and think that it will just finish short. Given how their films did last year (besides Spider-Man: No Way Home), I’m sure Disney and Marvel Studios will still be satisfied with just under $1B in earnings.
