Doctor Strange 2 director Sam Raimi says he didn’t think he could make another superhero film after Spider-Man 3

After a successful first two films, Spider-Man 3 (2007) was seen as a massive letdown with the fans. Between Peter Parker’s (played by Tobey Maguire) bizarre emo phase and having too many villains, the film was easily the worst of the original Spider-Man trilogy.

Now during a recent interview with Collider, the film’s director Sam Raimi, has revealed that the fan backlash from the film was so bad, that he didn’t think he could make another superhero film again.

“I didn’t know that I could face it again because it was so awful, having been the director of Spider-Man 3. The Internet was getting revved up and people disliked that movie and they sure let me know about it. So, it was difficult to take back on.”

Of course, Raimi has returned to the superhero genre. In early 2020, he was hired by Marvel Studios to replace Scott Derrickson as director on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. During the same interview, he talked about joining the MCU film.

“But then, I found out that there was an opening on Doctor Strange 2. My agent called me and said, ‘They’re looking for a director at Marvel for this movie and your name came up. Would you be interested?’ And I thought, ‘I wonder if I could still do it.’ They’re really demanding, those types of pictures. And I felt, ‘Well, that’s reason enough.’ I’ve always really liked the character of Doctor Strange. He was not my favorite, but he was right up there with the favorites. I loved the first movie, I thought [director] Scott Derrickson did a wonderful job, an incredible job. So, I said, ‘Yeah.’ They left the character in a great place. I didn’t think I would be doing another superhero movie. it just happened.”

Personally, it’s good to see Raimi back at the helm of a Marvel film. Why I did share the same frustration with fans about Spider-Man 3, I did also share their same opinion on how great Spider-Man 1 and 2 were. In terms of storytelling, I actually think Spider-Man 2 is one of the greatest superhero films of all time. So Raimi obviously deserved another shot.

As for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the film opens in theaters on March 25, 2022. With it less than six months away, I imagine will be getting a trailer soon.
