Disney estimates Eternals will earn $75M domestically during its opening weekend

Bloomberg is reporting that the Walt Disney Company estimates that their new Marvel Studios film Eternals will earn around $75M at the box office in North America during its three-day opening weekend. If accurate, this would make it the third or fourth highest domestic opening this year (Venom: Let There be Carnage $90M, Black Widow $80M, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings $75.3M).

At one point, there was talk about the Chloé Zhao-directed film becoming the first post-pandemic movie to earn over $100M during its first weekend. However, since last week, projections have started to come down because of negative reviews from critics.

At the moment, the Phase Four film has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any MCU movie. In fact, at 54%, it’s deemed “Rotten,” which is a first for a Marvel Studios film.

Of course, there’s always a chance that the estimates are wrong. Going into its opening weekend, the studios last film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was only projected to earn around $45M-$50M. Of course, it ended up blowing by those expectations and grossing $75.5M ($94.67M during four-day holiday weekend). However, unlike Eternals, Shang-Chi was universally praised by critics.
