It’s been widely known that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be writer/director James Gunn’s last go around with the popular Marvel Studios franchise. Now it seems it will also be the last time for another member.
During an interview with Digital Spy, actor Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, said that the third installment in the series will likely be his last.
“I mean, as far as my obligations, I’ve got Guardians 3, and that’s probably going to be the end of Drax.”
While things can certainly change, the news really shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise. By the time Vol. 3 comes out (May 5, 2023), it will have been over 10 years that Bautista had been playing the role. That’s a long time, even by MCU standards.
One other interesting detail he revealed during the interview is that Gunn wanted to do a spin-off film with him and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis.
“There were talks for a while about a Drax and Mantis film,” Bautista revealed. “It was really because it was James Gunn’s idea. He really wanted to do a Drax and Mantis film. He laid it out to me. I thought it was such a brilliant idea, but I haven’t heard any follow-up from the studio. I don’t think they’re very interested, or it doesn’t fit into the way they have things mapped out.”
That certainly would have been an interesting project. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Drax and Mantis’ interactions were some of the funniest parts. A whole movie with them would have been a lot of fun. Because they’re seen more of as side characters, I’d imagine Marvel Studios would have probably preferred making it into a Disney+ series instead.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to begin filming sometime this year. Before the film hits theaters in 2023, the group is expected to be seen in Thor: Love and Thunder (May 2022), and their own Holiday special which will hit Disney+ in late 2022.
