Chris Hemsworth says he will not be leaving the MCU after Thor: Love and Thunder

In the Summer of 2019, it was announced that Natalie Portman would be playing a female version of Thor in the upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder. With Portman taking up the mantle, some wondered if Chris Hemsworth’s time as Thor would end. By the time the movie comes out, Hemsworth will have played the God of Thunder in eight different films over a decade. A long time to be playing any role.

Well, in a new interview with Elle Man, the Australian actor was asked if he will retire the role after the fourth installment in the Thor franchise.

“Are you crazy?! I’m not going into any retirement period (laughs). Thor is way too young for that. I’m only 1500 years old! It is definitely not a film that I say goodbye to this brand. At least I hope so.”

If you’re a big fan of Hemsworth’s Thor, this is certainly good news. It would be really cool to have two different Thor’s going forward in the MCU. His last line of “At least I hope so”, did make me a little nervous there’s still a chance it could be his last time. Hopefully, he just said this because he hasn’t signed a contract yet.

As for Thor: Love and Thunder itself, not much is known about the plot but Hemsworth did have some high praise for the script.

“After reading the script, I can say that I am very excited. For sure there will be a lot of love and a lot of lightning in this production (laughs). I’m glad that after all that happened in Avengers: Endgame, I’m still part of the Marvel Universe and we can continue the story of Thor. Of course, I can’t tell you anything about the plot, but to satisfy your curiosity, I’ll say that I had a lot more fun reading the script than on Thor Ragnarok, and that proves something, because this movie was brilliant.”

Oscar-winner Taika Waititi is returning as writer and director. Along with Hemsworth and Portman, Tessa Thompson will return for her role as Valkyrie. Batman actor Christian Bale is expected to play the film’s villain, whose identity is currently unknown. Originally slated to come out in November 2021, Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on February 11, 2022.
