Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brings in $185M during opening weekend domestically and $450M Worldwide
During its opening weekend, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brought in a massive $185M at the box office in North America. That figure is good enough to be the 11th biggest opening of all-time and 7th biggest for an MCU film. It’s also the highest opening for any film in 2022 (The Batman $134M).
What’s impressive about Multiverse of Madness’ opening is that it more than doubled what the first Doctor Strange film made ($85M) when it hit theaters back in November 2016. According to Fandango’s Erik Davis, the $100M improvement is the biggest box office lift between a first and second movie in MCU history.
Before it even premiered on Disney+, Marvel Studios consistently referred to Moon Knight as a “limited series.” After its run, it was suspected that Oscar Isaac would then portray the character in a supporting role in an MCU film (Blade perhaps?) or another show. However, on Monday, the studio turned some heads when they changed the wording of Wednesday’s finale from “series finale” to “season finale.” As you can imagine, this has caused many to suspect that a second season could actually happen.
Following Wednesday’s episode, Deadline caught up with Mohamed Diab, who served as director for four episodes and executive producer for its entire run. When the outlet asked if there would be a season 2, Diab said he didn’t know.
“We don’t know if there’s a next season,” Diab said. “Marvel doesn’t go with a conventional way, so even if they like the character and want to extend the world, it could be season 2, it could be a standalone film, or he can join another superhero’s journey. I’m kept in the dark, just like the fans. We never discussed it being a season 2, but one day there’s going to be an expansion, but I don’t know how it’s going to look like.”
Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi says Christian Bale’s Gorr will “probably” be the MCU’s best villain ever
Since it was officially announced in December 2020, MCU fans have been really excited to see former Batman actor Christian Bale take on the role of Gorr The God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder. In the comics, Gorr was a brutal villain who went around the Marvel Universal killing a countless number of gods with his mighty weapon, the All-Black the Necrosword. He was so powerful that it took three God of Thunder’s (present Thor, future Thor, and young Thor) to take him down.
During an interview this week with the AP News, Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi said that he thinks that Bale did such a great job portraying the god killer that he will ultimately go down as the best villain the MCU has ever seen.
“In my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.”
