On Friday, news broke that a fourth Captain America film was in the works and that a script was being written by Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman. It’s expected that the film will revolve around Sam Wilson (played by Anthony Mackie) as the new Cap.
Now in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mackie was asked about the report for the first time.
“I literally found out yesterday in a grocery store,” Mackie claims. “The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he’s like, ‘Yo, man. Is this real?!” [holds up a cellphone] “I’m like, ‘I haven’t heard anything.’ That’s what I love about working for Marvel. They call you, they’re like, ‘Come to L.A. We wanna tell you what’s going on.’ So, I’m excited to see what happens, but I haven’t heard anything.”
While there’s a chance he’s lying, it’s entirely believable that Marvel Studios didn’t tell the actor about the project. The studio has a long history of keeping things hidden from its stars. For example, during Avengers: Infinity War‘s production, cast members were only allowed to read parts of the script that they were in.
Also during the interview, Mackie talked about the new Cap suit that was introduced in the series finale of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He said that it consisted of “10 to 12” pieces and that he’s shocked that set pictures didn’t leak online.
“We were in downtown Atlanta, in the middle of Atlantic Station, surrounded by apartment buildings and condos and doing a huge fight, sequence and nobody took pictures,” he recalls. “It was crazy.”
No other details are really known about Captain America 4. If I had to guess, I wouldn’t count on it hitting theaters till 2023-24.
