Anthony Mackie officially signs on to star in a fourth Captain America film

By Stephen Ippolito | August 19th, 2021

Yesterday, Deadline was the first to report that Anthony Mackie had officially signed on to star in an untitled Captain America 4 film.

The news wasn’t all that surprising. Back in April, it was reported that the film was in the works with Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson tapped to pen the script. It seems though, that it was only yesterday that Mackie agreed to do it.

It’s still unknown if Sebastian Stan, who co-starred in the Disney+ series, will join him. It’s hard to imagine a Captain America film without the Winter Soldier, so I’m sure he’ll be involved in some capacity.

This will mark the 8th time Mackie will portray Sam Wilson in the MCU. From 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, he was known specifically as the Falcon. However, it wasn’t until the final episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier this year that he took up the mantle as Captain America.

It’s anyone’s guess on when the film will hit theaters. With only a lead and writers currently staffed, I’d say the earliest we’re going to see it is late 2023, possibly 2024.

  1. I feel a bit mixed with what I think about this Captain America 4 film. Even though Chris Evans is supposed to be done with the MCU I got a feeling they might bring him back. Which would be taking a step backwards for the MCU and phase 4 is supposed to be moving forwards. I DO want to see more of Sam Wilson though. I thought FATWS was really good but a bit confusing with all the Captain America stuff. Hopefully it turns out good. What do you think of there being a Captain America 4? I love the Captain America movies and FATWS so I’m looking forward to it. Just hope they don’t bring Chris Evans back.
