Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt (MCU’s “Thunderbolt” Ross) passes away at the age of 71

By Stephen Ippolito | March 13rd, 2022

I’m sad to report that Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt passed away today at the age of 71. His son, Will, confirmed the news in a statement.

“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes. The family requests privacy at this time.”

Hurt became a breakout star in the 1980s after appearing in films like Body Heat (1981), The Big Chill (1983), Children of a Lesser God (1986), Broadcast News (1987), and The Accidental Tourist (1988). In 1985, he won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Kiss of the Spider Woman.

MCU fans will surely recognize Hurt as he played General “Thunderbolt” Ross on a recurring basis. First appearing in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, he would go on to play the role in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and last year’s Black Widow. There were rumors that he was also set to appear in the She-Hulk series, but nothing has been confirmed.

My thoughts go out to Hurt’s family and friends for their loss.
