Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, it’s been a prolonged process to get Deadpool 3 made. While the film was officially confirmed to be in the works by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige last year, there hasn’t been that many updates since.
Last week, Deadpool himself Ryan Reynolds did give a rare but brief one when he said that it was “coming along”. Now in another interview with Collider, the actor had this to say when asked if he and Shawn Levy, who he’s worked with recently on Free Guy and The Adam Project, have talked about him directing it.
“We pretty much talk about everything, but I’ll say this about that particular subject is I’ll have a batch of updates on that sooner rather than later, I hope. So I’ll be able to get into stuff about Deadpool a little bit more clearly and definitively down the road.”
The “sooner rather than later” line is what really has people talking. Comic-Con isn’t till July, so there are no events coming up that I could see announcements being made. This is something will definitely keep our eye on.
As for Levey directing the film, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this being a possibility. Last August, the filmmaker hinted that he’d had conversations with Marvel Studios about taking up the project. Given his success with action comedies and his strong relationship with Reynolds, I’d say he’d make an excellent choice.
Obviously, there’s no timetable on when Deadpool 3 will get released. At this point, I wouldn’t expect it to hit theaters until at least 2024. The good news though is that it will be rated R like the first two films. This will be a first for Marvel Studios, whose films have all been PG-13.
