Jon Watts will no longer direct Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four film

Major MCU news has broken in the past couple hours. Deadline has revealed that Jon Watts, director of all three Marvel Studios/Sony Spider-Man movies, will no longer helm the upcoming Fantastic Four film.

According to the outlet, the break-up didn’t have anything to do with “creative differences,” the most common reason these things happen. Instead, they say that Watts just wanted a break from the “superhero realm.” Since he’d been working on Spidey films nonstop since 2015, him wanting a break makes sense.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, co-president Louis D’Esposito, and Watts released statements on the shocking news.

“Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.”

“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

One interesting piece of information that Deadline added is that both Sony and Spider-Man producers (Feige and Amy Pascal) want Watts to keep directing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films. While they say it’s possible that he could continue, they note that the next movie is likely “down the road.”

Watts was officially announced as director of the Fantastic Four at Disney’s Investor Day presentation in December 2020. Since then, there’s been basically no news on the project.

It will be interesting to see who Marvel Studios chooses to replace Watts. I’ve already seen multiple people online call for Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Peyton Reed, so that would be an interesting choice. Guess will just have to wait and see.
